The Spirits Speak
Episode 1: The Arrival
Sixteen kids are rowing canoes to a small island on Lake Michigan.
Gabrielle: “I’m Gabrielle, thirteen, from Kingsville, Texas.”
Luis: “Luis, fifteen years old, Gresham, Oregon.”
Yvette: “My name’s Yvette, I’m fourteen years old, and I come from Orlando, Florida. I’m one of the biggest girly-girls you’ll ever meet, but that doesn’t mean I won’t step it up in the competition.”
Brian: “Brian, fourteen, Cobleskill, New York.”
Mandy: “I’m Mandy, thirteen, Tesla, West Virginia.”
Drew: “Drew, fifteen, La Belle, Florida. I’m a funny guy, but a serious competitor. I’m going to try to crack some jokes and have fun, but I’m here to win!”
Lola: “I am Lola, I’m fourteen, and I come from Hollywood, California.”
Oliver: “Oliver, fifteen years old, Scottsdale, Arizona.”
Tristen: “My name’s Tristen, I’m thirteen years old, and I live in Brentwood, Maryland. I’m at the edge of the bell curve, without a doubt. I’m crazy, I’m weird, and I’m a nerd. It doesn’t get any stranger than this.”
James: “I’m James, fifteen, from Elizabeth, New Jersey.”
Gem: “Gem, fourteen, San Diego, California.”
Nike: “Nike, I’m twelve, from Salina, Kansas. I’m small, but good things come in small packages, so it would be a mistake to underestimate me!”
Kari: “My name’s Kari, I’m fifteen years old, from Brighten Park, Illinois.”
Blake: “Blake, fourteen years old, Metairie, Louisiana.”
Carla: “Carla, fourteen, Mariners Harbor, New York.”
Zach: “I’m Zach, I’m fifteen years old, and I live in Seattle, Washington. I know that I’m strong, and I know I’m a winner. Losing is not in my vocabulary!”
These sixteen will live on the island for weeks, pushing their bodies to the limit, all in the hopes of becoming champions!

JD Roth greets the group of kids outside the huts: “Hey everyone! welcome to The Spirits Speak!”
The group looks excited as JD continues.
JD: “I’m sure you would like to know how this game works, am I right?”
The group nods their heads.
JD: “I’m not going to tell you much, but what I can say is that this game involves quite a bit of luck!”
Several shocked faces come from the group!
JD: “The first challenge will be today at sunset, so I’ll see you at the beach for it. For now you may head into your huts and get to know each other a little bit.”
-Commercial Break-
The kids anxiously sprint to their new homes, set deep into the woods of the island.
Lola is the first to run into the girls hut: “Oh my gosh, this place is so cool!”
Lola: “The huts are amazing! I’m totally excited to finally have made it here, and I really hope I’m gonna be sticking around.”
Carla: “I call bottom bunk!” She sets her things down on the bunk closest to the door. “This place is awesome!”
Tristen: “Dude-Man, I know.” She climbs a ladder, and plops herself onto a top bunk above Carla.
In the boys hut, they are getting settled into their new home.
Zach drops his things onto a bottom bunk: “I got this bunk!”
Nike: “Agh, these things hurt.” He adjusts his position on the wooden bunk and winces.
Nike: “The huts are extremely rustic. It’s definitely going to be a challenge surviving out here.”
Luis: “I wonder, like, what the rules of the game are going to be.”
Brian: “No clue. He did say luck played a major role. Maybe it’s just we lift up a rock which says we win or lose?”
Luis: “Everyone is totally confused as to how this game goes. We’re all just waiting at our huts like sitting ducks for more information.”
-Commercial Break.-
JD and the kids meet at the beach: “Hey, everyone! What did you think of the huts?”
Kari: “They’re horrendous!” she laughs. “But it should be fun once we get used to it.”
JD: “Well, to get used to it you’ll have to stay here a while, and to stay here a while you will need a partner, and a strong partner at that.” JD pauses momentarily to examine the confused faces of the contestants. “The way this game works is you will be divided into eight teams of two- One boy and one girl per team. You will rely on your partner for everything, for they are the difference between you making it far, or going home first.”
Zach: “While JD’s saying this, I’m just looking around at all the girls, sizing them up, and seeing who would be the best match for me.”
JD: “Today the eight teams will be formed. The way this will work is quite simple. Out in the water there are 16 giant rings, and each of you will put your hands on one end, and your feet on the other. For as long as possible, you will endure through the pain, and stay in that position. The longer you last, the more pine cones you will win. Pine cones are a vital element to this whole game. They control who wins, who is eliminated, and who is matched with whom. Here’s the deal- If you come in first place, you win 16 pine cones. If you come in second, you get 15. If you come in third, you’ll get 14, and so on until we get all the way down to last place with one pine cone. Once we finish the challenge, we’ll head to the Temple of the Spirits, and place all the pine cones inside the Tiki God of the Island. He will spit out a pine cone, and whoever’s name is printed on that pine cone will choose their partner and color. That will continue until all eight teams are formed. So, without any further adu, let’s get started!”
Moments later, the kids get onto the rings.
JD: “On your marks, get set, GO!”
All sixteen are in the push-up position. After a few minutes Gem and Carla drop.
Carla: “Darn it!”
JD: “Keep holding on, everyone! It’s been six minutes! And- Oh! Nike just fell! Only thirteen remain.”
Time wears on, and over the course of the next five minutes Yvette, Brian, and Kari all fall, trimming the number of remaining contenders down to ten.
JD: “Six down, Ten to go. Who will win?”
Suddenly Luis falls, almost immediately followed by Mandy.
JD: “Luis and Mandy just fell, leaving eight people left in the challenge. Oh, but Tristen just dropped.”
Each of the remaining seven look totally focused as the 20-minute mark approaches. The wind picks up, and dark clouds loom menacingly over their heads.
Lola: “I can do this! I’m staying, baby!”
Oliver: “Agh- NO!” he screams, and drops into the ocean. “Crap!”
Another ten minutes passes, resulting in James, Gabrielle, and Blake falling off the rings.
JD: “Ooh, that’s it for James, Blake, and Gabrielle. Now it’s down to just Drew, Lola, and Za- Oh, Zach fell! Bringing it down to just Lola and Drew!”
Drew: “Man, my hands are killing me!”
Lola: “Mine too.” She takes one hand off the ring and blows on it.
Drew: “Just drop, Lola. Drop!”
Lola: “N-no!” she says as she stretches, fighting through the pain. “I want this win!”
A splash is heard, and JD yells: “That’s it! Game over, Lola wins!”
Lola: “Oh my gosh, yay!” she jumps off her ring, and runs to shore.
JD: “Congrats, Lola! You’ve won the challenge, and get 16 pine cones. Let’s head on over to the Temple of the Spirits, and get paired up!”
NEXT TIME ON THE SPIRITS SPEAK!
The contestants head to the temple of spirits to choose teams, and while some people are happy with the outcome…
James: “Thank God!” He stands up and saunters to JD. “I’ll pick… Tristen and Green.”
Others are crushed…
Lola rolls her eyes: “Yeah, gee, thanks.”
JD: “Lola, you don’t seem too happy at this..”
All this and more on the next Spirits Speak!
