I don't know if yall already know this but I figured out how the confessionals work! I'm rewatching E1 and in the confessional right after Blue wins the first Endurance mission, Jonna is talking and then she's like "Peace" and for a split second you see her hold up a remote. So its controlled by a remote.

Well usually they go into the confessional and start the camera...Its sorta like what they did on Flight 29 Down. They made their journal and junk. Its probly like that or like you said they use the remote.
