Hello everybody! Apparently, there's a Canadian show back in the late 2000s called "In Real Life", which features children competing in challenges based on real life jobs. There were several people who compared it to Endurance, but based on the premise, reminds me a bit of "Fetch with Ruff Ruffman". Here we go! Episode 1: --It feels kind of strange that we don't get an immediate introduction to who's competing. --"The last team to cross the finish line could be eliminated." But TAR Canada wouldn't come out for another four years... ----Speaking of TAR, being at a speedway reminds me of a Family Edition team, but I have to watch that season. --Unlike on Endurance, the teams were already decided in advance. I wonder why that is... --"He's jumping the fence!" haha. --Tug-of-war teams are still a thing? --Jesse: "Yeah, I can be dramatic--it's fun" --Sabrina's having way too much fun with the flag. --Ah Samantha--bless your heart. --The nerd/jock hybrid is more common than you think. --Both members of the Brown Team are from British Columbia, haha. --Maddison: "I like to be emotional--I'm not afraid to be." --Talon: "I'll make up any difference that comes..." The way he says it sounds so haughty... --Paige: "That's what [Jaiden] does--he fixes things!" --Paige: "What's the point in running if there's no prize in the end?" Story of my life. --And then they could use the racecar to drive over to the pit stop! --Not the Green Team having problems... --Carlisse: "I don't think he has enough determination to go far." That's a critic... --The way Sabrina greets the Yellow Team reminds me of Phil when he tells a team they're the "xth" team to arrive, but they got a penalty. --"Where do we find a cherry tree?" --Interesting to see how the Red Team's teamwork grows over this episode. --Isiah and Landon have a pretty wholesome partnership in the last leg. I thought we'd be getting a Curse of the Gray Team scenario for this one. --Happy that this is a non-elimination leg Experience! --It reminds me of an Amazing Race leg, except for how the contestants do not have to travel from country to country. --The Wrench == the Samadhi?

Episode 2:
--Why did we have a random all-boy team and all-girl team? There's a bit of inconsistency there... --How did they get permission for these kids to handle alligators? --"I didn't get eaten!" The most important thing. --I believe Tyler's lizard was trained not to bite. --Green's teamwork has a lot left to be desired... --Fortunately, the alligator wasn't harmed here. --It's interesting how Jesse's fellow competitors are more supportive than Carlisse is... --And like on E3, Purple gives the first Wrench to Yellow! (except for different reasons) --"Twice as much fun!" --Talon: "Women are complicated." Uh... --Landon and Isiah have some really good teamwork here! --Madison H. deserves the Courage piece for how she wrangled those alligators. --Carlisse: "I love Ben too much." Haha. --Sabrina: "I'll see you all at the finish line--I hope." --Not Jesse being diabolical, haha. --Seeing how Paul and Lilith noted the Shield, I can't wait to see how Blue yields the Samadhi Wrench. --Honestly, I wished that Green could've pulled it out somehow. They had this "bickering teammates" arc which would've been interesting to see, and they really tried their hardest until the end. Carlisse yelling wasn't fun at times, however. --What was the budget for this show? With all the prizes; the grand prize of college tuition and a trip; and these experiences, how did they get so much money? --Carlisse: "I'm proud of Jesse because he didn't start walking when we had to run..."

Episode 3:
--“Let's go milk a cow!" --"I don't think Sudoku was invented yet." Or Candy Crush. --"...the same way sprinters use treadmills or flirtatious teens use Facebook!" Nowadays, I think they would use Tinder. --Isiah: “Rock it!"/Landon: "Yeah, thank you!" --People like Paige is why we have the split Roadblock rule on The Amazing Race, haha. --Taion: "Thank you Mommy." Hehe --”He's too young to die!" --This is some workout! It reminded me of a task on The Amazing Race Australia 2 where the teams had to ride a mechanical bull for up to one minute. (coincidentally, it was also in Canada) --"Look at how hot our cow is!" --How is the Purple Team always so good in challenges? --Talon: "My bull kicked me." --Why didn't Blue just give the Samadhi Wrench to the Purple Team? They're clearly the strongest team in this field and Ruby Rae has experience. --Even with their reasoning, I still think it's quite illogical. --"Happy birthday, by the way!" That was random and caught me off guard! --Wow, Aaron had a nice flip there! Though having the bull near your head is quite scary. --Taion: "You gotta beat my score!" As if anybody could reach 30, other than him and Ruby Rae. --The way Madison B. reacted to her fall, I thought she was going to get medevaced. --d**n, the race to the pit stop is made more complicated. --Sabrina's mocking everybody, just sitting there and waving. --Paige: "You always get us stuck--why do you do that?" --Did Lilith get cake afterward? Asking the important questions here. --It might be the TAR fangirl in me, but I was actually sad to see the Teal Team go. I love my all-girl power in this race, and I'm upset they weren't able to take on the challenge. Admittedly, it was a bit more physical than the other ones, which didn't help them at all. But I felt like they really worked hard, and I wished that they would've made it further.

Episode 4:
--"What could be more cooler than this?" Getting onto an Endurance location, maybe? --"Isaiah is like twelve inches taller today..." --What are the safety precautions of this experience? --"I feel like Angelina Jolie right now!" --Talon and Madison have an interesting dynamic. They do push on each other's buttons, but not in the same way as with the Green Team. Plus Talon could be quite snarky. --Purple Team vs. E1 Blue Team--who would beat whom in a seven-game series? --Based on how Lilith was going, I thought it would've taken more time for the Blue Team to finish the course. --If the stunt double caught them, what would've happened? --Ben: "A stool--do you think I'm a carpenter?" --They're talking strategy now--as Ben and Ruby Rae have the Samadhi Wrench. --Not Red having carpeting experience, but good job for them! --So technically, Gray overcame the Samadhi? --Purple being good sports about the Wrench, haha. --Graeme: "Our adversaries are powerful, but we will prevail." --Paige also smiled quite a bit, which really takes away from the scene. --This task was quite interesting--it relied more on memorization rather than strength or speed. And it was in a different way than most other challenges of its kind (well, not on TAR...) --What a wild turn of events--something right out of a movie. --Strangely enough, I didn't get much of an impression of the Blue Team. They really tried to be strategic, but went the wrong way at times.

Episode 5:
--I wonder how do the producers decide on these Experiences? I know they could never do an office job, but which ones stand out? --Talon: "We all know it, and he's not here right now, so it's good." --Sabrina: "It looks like the same thing I have this morning." Haha. --Paige: "How about you let me just get you?" --Did Sabrina have to mention Madison getting the pig? Haha--she could be throwing some shade... --Not the Orange Team fighting again... --Jaiden: "So much for not being able to grab it..." --At least they don't have to look for a clue in a hay barrel... --Gray: No pressure, vs. Yellow's squabbling. --Landon: "Surprisingly, I drove a tractor before...I crashed it." --"I think their hay barrel is broken" *Colin intensifies* --Paige: "If we continue being mad at each other we might go further!" --I don't think J.D. could've imagined such a Samadhi Wrench, though he would usually do that for Endurance challenges when they go on too long. --Brown not giving Purple the Wrench is a huge strategic mistake. --Landon: "Let's call him Lucifer." --"massage the udder!" --Funny how some of the contestants were talking about the Shield, but didn't end up pursuing it. Which is why Orange brought it up as their downfall. --Like how Dany forgot about the Iron Fleet? --I feel like Orange had one of the more interesting arcs this season. They would be rather inconsistent in performances, and I think Paige sometimes reminded me of contestants who would only do one Roadblock on the Amazing Race. But there were moments when they found their footing, and I always liked when they managed to do so.

Episode 6:
--I wonder how the show got the OKs from the parents with this kind of task... --For such an on again, off again team, Yellow seems like they don't want to be switched, haha. --Purple is this show's equivalent of Aaron and Jonna--why would they switch? --Not Red having different opinions on whether they should split up or not... --Maddison sounds like she wants to stay partnered with Talon for strategic purposes, and yet this might be the only opportunity where she could switch teams. --Gray ended up switching? Aww man--they seemed to have the best teamwork amongst the group. I understood Isiah's logic in terms of wanting a better partner, but something about it puts me off. Maybe it's because they were too soft on each other? --I wonder what would've happened had this form of team switch occurred on Endurance. What combinations would be formed there? --Graeme: "Because he's so cute." haha. --"Fire gear is so hot right now." --Whoops, Tyler... --"We hate ropes now." --Aaron: "Thank you" (after receiving the Wrench, haha) --Isiah: "Man, people have already died inside the building." Wow. --Sabrina: "No need to ask me for the results, because I'll tell you!" --What happened to Maddison that resulted in a fear of fires? -That was a sweet moment from Yellow, especially with how they sometimes clashed. --Talon struggling with the tank, haha. --Talon: "We're all scared of something, I don't know what i'm scared of just yet." Haha. --Sabrina: "I just left a brand new pack of gum in there." Priorities... --Why did I expect this to be a non-elimination leg Experience this round? --Landon: "I get to go home!" --I loved how Landon and Isiah worked together, which made the team switch a bit harsher than I thought. That said, I did think Landon managed to work well with Tyler; I'd imagine they got unlucky here with some minor mistakes along the way. But at the end, they ended up adding up and causing Brown's elimination.

Episode 7: --Maybe hardly anybody targeting Purple might have impacted things, Maddison... --Sabrina: "it's a nice way of beating out morning rush hour." Or a way to impersonate a doctor, haha. --Graeme: "Check, I think." Back to medical school for you. --All you need to do is switch Red with Orange and you have the final four colors of Endurance: Hawaii. Haha. --With the time Gray took, the patient might as well have died. --Aaron: "I have a lot more respect for doctors, because there's a lot to remember." --"They could lose their patient!" And that scared me. --To be fair, these are teenagers, so they probably don't know how to do these operations. Me neither. --Talon: "Don't suffocate me." --Then again, Purple only were in a position where they needed the shield once. --Ben: "I've [sewn up a wound] before." The way he said it was so deadpan, until he explained it. --So if their patient "dies", does the team automatically get eliminated? --Talon: "Of course it wasn't me who missed ; it was my partner." --It's funny to see Purple sweep through the competition while everyone else would've killed their patients at this point. --The edit makes me think Yellow are going for something else... --...but fortunately, they made the right call in wrenching Yellow. --Though to be honest, the patient vomiting is a weird choice for the Samadhi. --Maddison: "I give the baby his bottle." ==I know Jaicyea hinted that Isiah had a hard time with Landon, but for some reason, both of them worked together better than they did with their new partners. Was it because they needed more time to communicate with them? Probably, but I think there was something in that original Gray Team which stood out for me, for some reason. Plus, Jaicyea had that nice arc with Aaron.

Episode 8:
--Graeme: "That is just great." Sarcasm alert! --Aaron: "Yummy." --Every time I think of "waste management", I think of people/organizations who use that as a cover for something more sinister... --For a moment, it looked like Yellow would throw the bin into the garbage truck! Haha. --Not Sabrina calling Purple out for not getting on the truck--but they weren't disqualified, so all is fine. --"People should really know how to wrap their garbage." Haha. --I'll try not breathing next trash day. --Graeme: "They're too perfect, they win every race..." Could also apply to Aaron and Jonna. --Talon: "If my partner's watching it, I'm sorry." Maddison, or your future one? --Who's going to put money on Purple taking the Wrench out of the game? Haha. --Graeme: "Are you underestimating us?"/Ben: "Yeah, we are." --I'm not sure how i would approach this challenge... --Aaron: "Vacuuming is staying the same at home--only if I get paid." --The music makes it more tragic than garbage. Then again, humans being the dirtiest species isn't totally wrong... --And then you can grow a garbage flower! --"Talon farts like Febreze compared to this." --Woah... --Dealing with soil is not everyone's forte today... ---Surprised how Yellow did so well in this segment! --Sabrina must not have been a good singer. --For a moment I thought Yellow got lost along the way and let the other two teams passed them. --Nice little pun there! --What was the point of using the shields if this was a non-elimination leg experience? --While In Real Life is compared to The Amazing Race, this breakup of the teams reminds me of Survivor and its merge. ----Imagine if the producers tried to do this on Endurance in the final three. Would it be better than the TV nut twist? --Sabrina: "Do you have a shield?"/Talon: "Not for you." --It seems like Aaron would believe that he wouldn't be weighed down, seeing that his arc is dependent on who he competed with. --Interesting that the guys seem to underestimate Ben, knowing that he's 1/2 of the strongest team here.

Before we get into the "every contestant for themselves" portion of the season, here's my final analysis of the teams.
1. Purple: Basically the Aaron and Jonna of their season. In addition, they were also quite strategic, taking the Wrench as their first-place prize multiple times, and know how to work together even when things got rough. Ruby-Rae might have benefited from their background, but they always manage to take on challenges well, so be it! 2. Gray: The original Gray Team was my favorite; I liked Landon and Isiah's dynamic and how wholesome they were together. There were times where they seemed to struggle, but were able to communicate effectively, in contrast to some other teams. This makes the team switch a bit surprising here, as I thought they would want to stay together. And while Isiah and Jaiceya got along, it wasn't the same. 3. Yellow: Both partners have probably the most interesting personalities of this season. Talon comes off as a bit arrogant, which can put people off. And Maddison H. frequently doesn't take that, which leads to a bit of conflict (I frequently hear it as a brother-sister like one). But when they managed to work together, they did great; Talon motivating Maddison when she was afraid of firefighting was a highlight of this season. 4. Red: Aaron and Jaiceya leaning to work together was a great arc to witness in the early episodes. I also think they were--especially Aaron--more of the strategic minds of this season, as they really thought about the Shield and such (though I'm still annoyed how people don't just give it to Purple). This makes Aaron's decision to switch a little less surprising, and he seemed to benefit from it the most. 5. Teal: I'm a bit of a sucker for all-female teams, and the Teal team here is no exception! They managed to work together and hold their own in challenges, though I wonder if the cowboy challenges ended up being too much for them. I wanted to see more of them, however. 6. Brown: Another team with an interesting dynamic, it's interesting to see them push themselves, only for Graeme pull the trigger on the team switch. Was there some deterioration of their partnership as time went on? 7. Blue: Another powerful team, though at the same time, didn't really leave much of an impression on me. They tried to strategize vis a vis the Shield, but they didn't get it, which eventually cost them in the Hollywood leg Experience. How far would they have gone had they inched it out? 8. Green: It looked like they would have a "clashing teammates working out" arc; unfortunately, between Clarisse's intensity and Jesse's actions, they weren't able to do so. 9. Orange: They had a very on and off dynamic during the show, with Paige backing out of challenges at times. I'm not sure if they or Green disagreed with each other the most, but when they did work together, they did so well.

Episode 9: --Sabrina has got a nice costume! --"Today you'll be doing these stunts...or trying to." --Imagine J.D. trying to split the teams--who would've won each season, then? --That "maybe" wasn't that convincing with Graeme. --At least you could climb back up where you left off in "Balance is the Key"... --We have proof that Ruby Rae isn't like Lilly in that challenge, haha. --Seeing Maddison fail to complete the mini tricycle challenge makes me sad. ----I understand having to establish a time penalty (because of working hours), but I did want to see her succeed. --This is one of the few times Aaron's size really helps him. --Aaron: "i told you I was going to win, man." --Graeme: "I'm balance-deficient, I guess..." --Hopefully Ben's dance training helps him with the tightrope... --The human pyramid as a way to determine stats is quite clever! --Thank you Sabrina for telling us they could practice--what will the kids' parents say if they die? --I'm kind of surprised Aaron did so badly; he seemed to do well with the hoop. --Helpful, Talon. --Nice. --Not Talon confiding in his former teammate about the Shield, though it implies they trust each other quite well. --Ben: "Pointed toes looks better than floppy, flexed feet." --57? I'm surprised! --But can they survive four swords thrust into their bodies? --I'm not sure about the circus acts, but this doesn't really make into a great story... --Aaron proving he's the strategic mind of the bunch. --I couldn't climb a rope back in elementary school; I couldn't imagine doing this. --Ben: "Nice scream, by the way." --Maddison: "This is for all of my friends!"/Talon: "You've got friends?" --It sounded like Sabrina was going to cry too. --I really like everybody who's left; it's going to be hard to see them go!

Episode 10: --How did the production team convince these kids' parents/guardians to do challenges in the wilderness? Wow. --Was there an audio error when Sabrina was recording the kayak descriptor? --I'm severely mixed on kayaking myself, but it looks fun! --They have to swim out to their kayaks too? Wow. --How is Ruby-Rae so good at everything? --Graeme: "Top of the morning to you, Maddi!"/Maddison: "I give up." --Maddison: "I kind of knew I was in last place, and it's an amazing thing to feel because I knew I wouldn't be able to go to BC [British Columbia] and go kayaking." ----Is it just me, or does Maddison have this underdog arc emerging from the last two episodes? --Talon being highly arrogant, yet again. --Ben: "I guess we aren't observant!"/Talon: "Some of us aren't..." --Sabrina: "You're not a team anymore, buddy." Are Ben and Ruby-Rae going to sign up for TAR Canada now? haha. --Talon: "I can count to four!" --Slow and steady could save you still, Maddison.... --Are they orienteering? --Now I can take that comment back about Ben and Ruby-Rae. Welp, it was fun when it lasted. --Next task--saving Sabrina! --Graeme moving towards civilization! Does that mean he can quit? --Graeme: "Now witness the vanishing act into last place." --Sabrina: "Did the bear look a lot like a tree?" --Speaking of bears... --Was that sabotage from Talon? --Ben: "You want to bring the drama, Talon? I can bring the drama." --Talon: "This thing called emotion, really doesn't work..." Says you. -- The next day... --"Purple power!" --Ben's grin when he thought of Wrenching Talon >>> --"Tiring eh?" --From the commercial break, it looked like Maddison would've lost whatever lead she had left. --Graeme: "I have some compass-reading disability, I must say." --Interestingly, the last two eliminations are based off of minor mistakes that sent the victim unraveling. Shows how tough the competition is at the top and anything could be fatal. --New watch smell! --Purple vs. Yellow for the end, as it was meant to be...

Episode 11:
--Sabrina: "We paid extra for the rain just to make it difficult for you guys." No need, unless you like Kirkland Signature Rain--imported! --Was this whole bit scripted or was it spontaneous? --I wonder what would've happened if there were any Black contestants remaining... --Considering how many obstacles Ben went through, he did a good job with the ATV. --Sabrina: "You made it to the finish line...and also wrecked it at the same time." --Talon: "Nobody is going to come in last for [Maddison]." --I'm surprised nobody ran over the chairs during this segment. --Do they have to apply their ER skills in this challenge? --Ben: "Ruby, have fun!" --This is the hypothetical situation of Purple and Yellow getting switched, though in the end, the original teammates were perfect for each other. --Ben: "No more drowning." --"Even if I'm in first or second, I will wait at the finish line for Madi and Ruby Rae cross, and then I'll be second last." Hopefully it doesn't bite back at him. --Outlook not so good. --Sabrina: "They grow up so fast." --This is the In Real Life equivalent of "it starts with an 'F', that's all I can say." --I wonder how Talon felt at that point, knowing his ex-partner won this leg Experience. --And just like that, Talon flipped the tables on Ben. Arrogance is a killer in the real world, apparently. ----And it's quite unfortunate, as Ben was definitely seen as the good guy of the two, but not persevering in getting the Shield did him in. --Are Ruby Rae and Maddison the true Black Widows?

Episode 12:
--"You won't like what's coming up next." What a way to humble them right at that moment. --Why couldn't the military go to these places? --Interesting that Ruby Rae hands over the Samadhi Wrench right now--it's usually later on in the Experience. --10/8 = 1.25 paintballs per station. So he has to be very economical. --So even if Maddison was perfect with her final shots, she would still have a penalty. :/ --Was this paintball challenge doomed to fail? ----Ruby-Rae: "Hold my paintball gun.", apparently. --Was this firemaking challenge done before Survivor? (edit: no--at least for the final four) --Wouldn't it be easier to pile a bunch of wood before lighting a match? --Talon: "I have ashes." Is this the theme of the episode? --Did the SEALS have a little bit of cotton in had for this case? How would the other contestants face this mission? --Awkward... --I don't think even Gray Team quit when they struggled with the tractor; it's surprising that Ruby-Rae would do so, especially with how well she breezed through most of the challenges. --So the Shield, in this case, is an automatic ticket to the finale? --Talon the sadist. --How many shots do you need before you get killed? --Technically, they covered river, if you know what I mean. --Maddison: "There's snapping turtles and water snakes in there!" --When I heard "jumping out of a helicopter", I assumed they would be going skydiving. --Maddison and her fire dances--name a better do. --I want a paintball party... --What a graceful entrance from Talon... --"A couple drops of water sealed my fate." It would've been interesting to see Ruby Rae falling just short of the finale, after doing well for so long; I wonder what that would've meant for the edit. --I'm confused about why the Wrench is still in play--why not take it out of the game (at this point)? Then we would have a level playing field, and then we can have the best girl win.

Episode 13:
--"But teamwork meant success for others" *features Ben and Ruby-Rae* --I swear to God if Ben and Ruby-Rae haven't kept in touch at some point, I would be quite disappointed. (then again, neither did Aaron and Jonna) --Kind of shocked about the Purple Team being the only team to win more than one Experience. Goes to show how dominant they were (going back to the E1 comparisons, Jon and Sabrina were the only team to beat Aaron and Jonna for more than one mission) --Mostly against the Yellow Team for some reason. --"it's girl against girl against machine." --How did the producers convince the parents to let the teens become pilots? ---It's also funny because the 'pilot' usually refers to the first episode of a TV program. And this is the season finale! --$15,000 in scholarship money is so precious. --As J.D. said, "Either way, you'll be going home--win or lose!" --Maddison is going in as the underdog here. --Missing the first bag really hurt Maddison. --Sabrina: "You don't get extra points for knocking down the host." --But they got close to getting their eardrums popped. --Here's a showcase of different learning styles. --"...before killing your best friend." Is anybody getting sued here? --"egg dress" haha. --It was a matter of milliseconds, though... --What a battle over the air! --The moment Maddison let go of the controls, I started panicking. Something was going really wrong. --Of all the places in the world to feel nauseous, the cockpit of the plane is amongst the worst of them. --Maddison holding up her vomit in a bag is one of those RTV moments... --Ruby Rae getting nothing was a surprise, though it might be the minor errors which get you. --Sabrina: "I was about to say hope and glory..." --How long was the shooting for a season of In Real Life? --I'm thinking that Ruby Rae was being sincere there. --This is so much more engaging (and dangerous!) than the Final Temple of Fate. --Ruby Rae's reaction to winning the whole thing really is endearing, if a bit anticlimactic due to the circumstances. ----And it just gives me a lot of mixed emotions going into the end. Ruby Rae winning wouldn't have been shocking, especially with how well she had done throughout the entire season. On the other hand, I can't help but feel bad for Maddison, but at the same time I wonder if she could've pushed through somehow. Vomiting twice is especially scary; combined with the risk of blacking out, I could see why she threw in the towel. ----I wonder what it means to show true Endurance--to push through during those tough times, or giving up when your body tells you to? --Overall, I had a fun time watching this first season! While it obviously takes more inspiration from TAR than Survivor, In Real Life does test the contestants' commitment, courage, luck, strength, heart, trust, knowledge, discipline, leadership, perseverance, ingenuity, teamwork, friendship, and karma as Endurance does. There's a lot of practical application befitting the title, which is really cool to see! Plus the casting for the first season was quite good. ----In contrast to J.D. Roth, Sabrina's more willing to have fun and doesn't really give out advice to the contestants. It plays onto her strengths as a comedienne, but she brings a lightheartedness to the show when they needed it.
Would you guys like me to continue with season 2?
