Endurance 1 Confessional Counts

Hey guys. Huge Endurance fan and other reality shows like Survivor/Big Brother/ Amazing race as well. Something I've seen other people do is to do tallies of the amount of confessionals players have so you can see who the show was trying to highlight or who was or wasn't a good story teller. I started with Season 1 and if you guys like it, I could do seasons 2-6. A lot of people have different interpretations of what exactly is a confessional because this show in particular will split the confessional up 4 different times during the course of a challenge. So I had to use my judgement about what their complete thought was and what story they were trying to tell in each confessional. So this is my analysis:

Episode 1:

The Beginning

(Interesting to see the Green team left out completely)

(Not surprised to see the creator of the list and one of the enforcers of it on top)

(This seemed a little bit more fair and spread out with a winning team member to have the most content makes sense)

Sabrina, Ashley - 2
Christian, Brandon, Aaron - 1
Layla, Skyler, Jon - 0

(Not surprised to see Max/Jenna/Lana/Trevor/Jonna on top as they went to temple or won the mission, Jonna is a dominant story teller in these first 4 episodes)

Episode 5:

Yellow wins Endurance Mission

Aaron, Jonna - 3
Chelsea, Trevor, Christian - 2
Ashley, Layla, Brandon - 1
Skyler, Jon - 0

(Shocked to see ZERO content from Skyler and Jon, ESPECIALLY because Jon won the challenge this episode. Lana/Sabrina ran the episode unsurprisingly)

Episode 6:

Red wins Temple Mission and Purple leaves
Layla - 9
Christian - 5
Brandon, Ashley - 3
Skyler, Sabrina - 2
Lana, Chelsea - 1
Jon, Trevor, Jonna, Aaron - 0

(Surprising that the winners have no edit here, however this is the only episode where they dont. Layla takes the cake for the most confessionals in a single episode this entire season as she was sent to the Temple here. Christian/Ashley won the mission so not surprised they were speaking a lot. If you want another surprise, Jon has only spoken to us, the audience, only TWICE in 6 episodes.)

Episode 7:

Yellow wins Endurance Mission

Trevor, Jonna, Aaron, Jon - 1


(Not surprised that Sabrina/Chelsea are high as they either won or got Samahdi. Ashley tries to make a move and is disappointed in the loss.)

(One of the biggest episodes for me atleast this season, glad everyone was featured. Green almost beating Blue was a huge moment. Ashley dominating the story telling spot)

Green wins Endurance Mission

(Episode where Sabrina wants to turn on Ashley, a lot of confessionals between Red/Sabrina discussing this and Lana being happy she won her first Mission and is getting revenge)

Aaron - 4
Lana, Jon - 3
Trevor - 0

(This episode a lot of drama centered around whether Sabrina was lying about liking Aaron and the drama about it. Also, Sabrina/Lana picking on Jonna for sending them. I was surprised Trevor wasn't shown AT ALL talking in the episode he is eliminated in.)

Episode 11:


Blue wins Endurance Mission

Sabrina, Christian, Ashley - 6
Aaron - 5
Jonna, Jon - 4

(We finally find out that Jon and Ashley had sort of a flirting romance? Why so late? This could have been a great story line)

Episode 12: 

Blue wins Temple Mission and Red leaves

Ashley, Jon - 3

(This episode there was a very non strategic part (I believe one of very few in Endurance history) where the players go and snorkel and have fun and there is little talk of strategy or the actually game in that segment. They mostly complained about how cold the water was or how difficult it was to scuba dive.)

Now another thing to look at is the average amount of confessionals each player had in the amount of episodes they were in.

Ashley (43 Confessional/12 Eps) = 3.58
Christian (42 Confessional/12 Eps) = 3.5
Jonna (35 Confessional/13 Eps) = 2.6
Lana (33 Confessional/10 Eps) = 3.3
Aaron (28 Confessional/13 Eps) = 2.1
Skyler (19 Confessional/8 Eps) = 2.3
Chelsea (18 Confessional/ 8 Eps) = 2.25
Jon (18 Confessionals/ 13 Eps) = 1.3
Layla (17 Confessional/ 6 Eps) = 2.8
Trevor (16 Confessional/ 10 Eps) = 1.6

So what does that mean? It means that the average amount of confessionals Sabrina got across the entirety of 13 episodes is 4 whereas Jon only got 1.3. So the players that really told the story of Endurance 1 were Sabrina, Ashley, Christian, Lana, Jonna and Skyler. (Minorly Aaron and Chelsea) I think these are all interesting facts and I understand mostly ALL of the edit but one persons....

Jon? What happened here?! He's good looking, on a strong and popular team with the most vocal and powerful player in the game. How does he fall into her shadow and not get any airtime really? Every confessional he did have seem well articulated to me? I mean nothing was ground breaking but I disagreeumption is the producers didn't find anything he said interesting almost ever for them to dupe him like that. Especially when it gets down to the FINAL 4 TEMPLE episode for him to have more than 1 Confessional in an episode. Seemed like they knew they had to show him at that point.

Anyway, I had fun with that. If I made any mistakes mathematically let me know lol. One thing to remember is confessionals can be interpreted differently by everyone but I feel like this is very close or is the realistic count. Let me know if you guys enjoyed this and I'll do Season 2 next

I freaking love this kind of stuff!! No surprise at Sabrina being at the top. Jon’s number is surprising. Especially because I would’ve guessed that Brandon had the least average out of all the official contestants. I feel like we barely got to know him but we did know Jon??

Glad you like it! Brandon definitely seemed like he would have less to me as well before I started the re-watch. All of his confessionals were just basic reactions of something happening and all said in kind of a boring monotone way. I'm not sure what the producers saw in casting him to be honest. As for Jon, no we didn't get to know him. I wonder what his reaction to watching it back was. The only thing I can recall was him saying how the Brotherhood would be a tough alliance to beat and having a crush on Ashley. :/

Great work on doing all of this counting!

I would love to see these numbers for the other seasons. It would be interesting to see how the show changed in terms of how it handled confessionals from season 1 to season 6, if indeed it did change at all. It would also be interesting to see if there are any other contestants that got basically ignored in the first episode of each season, and if those contestants finished better or worse than Green Team in E1.

I haven't tried to do any counts, but if you have time, I'd like to know more about how you did your counting. Does the contestant's name have to appear on the screen in order for a confessional to count? If a contestant has confessional time, then another contestant has confessional time, and then the first contestant has more confessional time about basically the same topic, does that count as one confessional for the first contestant (because it was about the same topic) or two confessionals (because of the break for the other contestant)?

Hi, glad you like! Just finished E2 and am working on E3. As far as how I count it, ultimately it is my interpretation. So some counts could end up differently depending on who does them. I waited for a contestant to appear whether on or off screen with commentary, and once I felt as if their completed thought was done then that counted as 1 confessional. If right after they finish talking, they begin talking about a totally different subject (Which happened many times) than I counted that as a separate confessional. Also, I looked at where they filmed each confessional (as you know they had the confessional booth or did their talks different places on the beach, etc) So in my opinion, a complete thought is a confessional for the most point. Something that I didn't count however was for example during E2's partner game, everyone was asked who they wanted as their partner and 4 guys were shown saying "Jacquelyn" over and over. To me that shouldnt count because it's not really them confessing a complete thought.
